An American in Zimbabwe

I’ve been in Zimbabwe for three and a half weeks. Three weeks of extreme heat, restless nights, and homesickness. I have been traveling on bumpy roads, eating odd foods, and shaking sweaty hands, but all of it is worth it. All of it is worth it when children greet me with bear hugs and I see beautiful smiles light up their faces. All of it is worth it, when I think about the hundreds of children in the Living Proof Program who have and will receive new uniforms and shoes. All of it is worth it, when I dance and sing in the churches here.

I feel homesick quite often, but I know that will ease in the coming weeks. After the rest of the team went home two weeks, I was really struggling. I felt unprepared and was incredibly emotional thinking about my friends leaving and returning to the states while I stayed. Calls from home have encouraged me and I've been so thankful to be able to stay in touch with everyone while I’m here. I cannot imagine how difficult it was for those who came to Zimbabwe in the 1950’s with no contact whatsoever, except by letter (which is very unreliable here). Because of the convenience of technology, I am able to stay connected with you! I love hearing from you, whether by email (spankyjones97@gmail.com) or on Facebook! Prayers are greatly appreciated, not only for me, but for the lovely people of Zimbabwe who have to deal with a crazy white girl from the States!
